For BRIDES’ 2022 Style Issue, Gabourey Sidibe and Brandon Frankel explored what marriage, celebration, and bridal fashion could look like entirely on their own terms. Gabourey’s resistance to traditional wedding conventions became central to the story, creating an opportunity for the fashion to reimagine bridal style through bold color, print, texture, and unexpected silhouettes rather than conventional white gowns.

THE STORY

As part of the styling team, I assisted in bringing the editorial’s fashion direction to life across multiple looks for Gabourey and Brandon. The wardrobe embraced statement-making bridal fashion, from African-inspired prints and vibrant color to feathers, dramatic volume, jewelry, and tailored menswear, supporting a visual story that felt celebratory, expressive, and personal to the couple.

CREATIVE APPROACH

The shoot became the cover story for BRIDES’ fourth digital issue and did more than capture Gabourey’s unconventional approach to bridal style, it helped reshape her own vision of becoming a bride. Gabourey shared that experiencing the looks gave her a new appreciation for the power of bridal fashion and even influenced how she imagined her future wedding celebration and wardrobe.
